The concept which has inspired my graduate collection is based on the limitless nature of children’s imagination and how curious they can be. Tim Walker created beautiful images of his representation of one of my favourite books “Lord of the Flies”. He believed that when the school boys were left to their own devices their imagination would run wild and they were full of creativity. I love how playful this is and aim to portray this freeness in my collection. I have explored childhood and the sense of extroversion when children dress themselves, which is communicated through my textiles and the use of mixed and matched prints as well as the different textures.
I have also drawn inspiration from old family photos, especially of my grandad in Jamestown, which is the small island he used to live on. My grandad used to love sailing and fishing which I took a fascination to and, has influenced some of my draping as well as materials used such as para-cord which is used to tie elements together and for macrame tops.
I have explored the ‘Bright Young Things’ who were a group of young bohemian aristocrats in 1920’s London. They were known for being rebellious, promiscuous, irresponsible, outrageous and glamorous. This spurred on interest in what I call the preppy school boy/girl look which involves collared shirts, varsity jackets, tweed and houndstooth, and embroidered letters and numbers. This inspired me to create my own embroidered symbols and badges. All these ideas and themes combine into something crazy yet sophisticated, wild but refined.
Buying from independent designers creates a relationship with the things you wear and builds your connection with how they are made.
